Do I have to wait until Medicare age to retire?

Written by financial advisor Steve Elliker, 1/25/2026

Some of the top reasons you may be considering retirement:

  • Dislike your job and are close to “retirement age”
  • More time with family
  • Travel

One of the biggest hesitations with retirement before the age of 65 is healthcare due to Medicare. Make no mistake, you need to have healthcare in the US and you do not want any gaps in coverage. However, did you know that there are options for healthcare even if you are no longer employed and are not yet age 65?

Some of those options may include:

  • COBRA from your current employer
  • Getting healthcare from a working spouse’s employer plan
  • Health cost sharing platforms like Medi-Share or Christian Healthcare Ministry
  • Pennsylvania’s Health Insurance Market (Pennie.com), if you live in Pennsylvania

You may be able to retire before age 65 and still have good healthcare coverage. Talk to your advisor about what options make sense for you.
